WordPress vs Shopify for a Small Business

The two platforms aren’t really competitors. WordPress is a content system you can extend into a shop; Shopify is a shop with the hard parts — payments, tax, checkout security — already solved. The right choice depends on what your site is mostly for.

Choose WordPress when

• The site is mainly information, services or a portfolio, and selling is secondary or absent.
• You will publish regularly — articles, listings, case studies — and want full control of how they look.
• You are comfortable with the site being your responsibility to keep updated, or you pay someone to.
• You sell a small number of products or bookings and can add WooCommerce for that.

WordPress has no platform fee. Its running cost is hosting, a domain, and the time or money to keep it and its plugins updated. Neglected, a WordPress site is the one that gets hacked.

Choose Shopify when

• Selling products online is the point of the site, not a side feature.
• You want inventory, variants, discount codes, shipping rules and tax handled for you.
• You would rather pay a predictable monthly fee than manage security and updates.
• You may sell through Instagram, Facebook or Google Shopping as well as your own site.

Shopify charges a monthly subscription and a small fee per transaction unless you use Shopify Payments. In return, almost all maintenance disappears.

The real cost is maintenance, not setup

A build is a one-time cost on either platform. What differs is the year after. Shopify’s fee is the price of not thinking about updates. WordPress has no fee but needs attention — budget for a care plan or a few hours a month if nobody in-house will do it.

A simple rule

If you had to describe your site in one word and that word is “shop”, use Shopify. If it is anything else — “brochure”, “blog”, “directory”, “booking” — start with WordPress and add a store only if you need one.
